VIETNAM’S ENTERPRISES STRIVE FOR GREEN TRANSITION

Following its strong commitments to achieving Net Zero at COP26 in 2021 and the energy transition pledge at COP28 in 2023, Vietnam has determined to promote green transformation and advance energy transition.

Vietnam’s business community has made significant progress with effective actions across all sectors of the economy, aligning with two key transformation trends: digital transformation and green transformation.

Committed to accompanying Vietnam on its journey towards Net Zero, HEINEKEN Vietnam shared its efforts to realize the Net Zero ambition by transitioning to renewable energy and maximizing the application of the circular economy model. The company is also implementing the 4Rs: reducing energy consumption through advanced equipment and process optimization; replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy; removing residual emissions through carbon offset projects; and reporting and evaluating impacts throughout the process.

According to Ms. Tran Ngoc Anh - HEINEKEN Vietnam's Senior Director of External Affairs - the company has always focused on sustainable development, with three main pillars: environment, society, and responsible living. In the field of environment, they aim to achieve net-zero emissions in all production activities by 2030 and net-zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2040.

As for Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hue at the External Communications and Sustainable Development Department of AEON Vietnam, the company focuses on core policies for sustainable development, enhancing awareness, and providing training support by offering over 50% of tuition fees for employees to take initiative in their learning while also emphasizing communication and awareness campaigns to encourage employees to make creative improvements in sustainable development activities.

In recognizing the trend of dual transformation, many businesses view the increasing standards for sustainable development as an opportunity. When these standards become mandatory, the entire supply chain and partners will align in terms of strategy and investment, working together towards sustainable development.

However, many small businesses face difficulties in accessing the necessary technology to implement sustainable solutions, and production costs are rising. As higher standards emerge, they will have to deal with new transformations and investments and figure out how to achieve synchronized development across the supply chain. Meanwhile, green transition requires all actors in the supply chain, from large enterprises, manufacturers, medium and small businesses to micro-enterprises.

According to research conducted by NielsenIQ Vietnam, in the next five years, manufacturers and businesses will face huge impacts related to sustainability standards set by countries as well as consumers. These standards must be applied evenly, from the production phase to the supply of products to the market.

Most of Vietnam's green technology patents are related to fields such as wind energy, waste management, reducing air and water pollution, and green buildings. In terms of digital transformation technologies, Vietnam holds only 8% of the total 537 patents in emerging economies, behind Malaysia (58%), the Philippines (16%), and Thailand (11%).

According to the World Bank report in 2023 on the trends of dual transitions, there is a connection between digital technology and green technology. Based on studies and patent data analysis, 16 green technologies and 11 digital technologies were selected as the foundation for twin transitions. The report also mentions that in the period 2017-2021, Vietnam held 15% of the total 493 green patents in emerging markets, behind Malaysia (51%) and Thailand (20%).

Netzero is the goal of many countries around the world, including Vietnam. In recent years, a series of sustainable development policies have been implemented in Vietnam, such as the target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the orientation of Vietnam's Power Development Plan (PDP8), and support for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), reflecting the country's strong commitment to achieving green goals and socio-economic development.
